Shame Resilience

“Shame is the most powerful, master emotion. It’s the fear that we’re not good enough. … [It] corrodes the very part of us that believes we are capable of change. Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.”
-Brene Brown, Researcher, LCSW, New York Times Bestselling Author, and creator of The Daring Way curriculum.

Sunrise employs a method championed by brilliant Brené Brown called The Daring Way™. We know that each of our girls suffers from shame in one way or another. In order to create lasting change, it is vital that they learn to change their negative self-talk and learn skills to build shame resilience. Each student participates in Shame Resilience Group weekly while at Sunrise.

Shame Resilience groups help students:

  • Recognize shame triggers and physical responses to shame.

  • Practice critical awareness of their shame and expectations they place on themselves.

  • How to share their shame in a healthy, therapeutic way.

  • How to show self-compassion.

  • Make a plan for how to react to shame in the future.

“Willingness to show up changes us, it makes us a little braver each time… Because true belonging only happens when we present our authentic, imperfect selves to the world, our sense of belonging can never be greater than our level of self-acceptance.”

-Brene Brown
